The Bachelor‘s Kelley Flanagan told her fans that she’s currently focusing all of her time and attention on doing the necessary research to stay healthy amid her Lyme disease diagnosis. The 29-year-old former reality star was introduced to Bachelor Nation when she competed for Peter Weber’s heart. Her road to finding love on television begun with a bang as she actually met the leading man in August 2019 before the cameras started rolling. The duo both happened to be staying in the same hotel for separate weddings, when Peter thought he’d never see her again, but she warned him that she might be a contestant on his upcoming season. Since then, the duo experienced a whirlwind romance with Peter sending Kelley home halfway through his season, only to reignite their flame after his failed engagement to his final rose winner, Hannah Ann Sluss, and failed relationship attempt with his runner-up, Madison Prewett. Though their relationship lasted for about two years, they recently called it quits on a terrible note.
Since then, Kelley has been focusing her attention to her health announcing on Instagram just last week that she’s been diagnosed with Lyme disease. In her teary video, Kelley admitted that she had a strong feeling something was wrong because her body became very sensitive and reactive to day-to-day things. The ABC star continued to explain how Lyme disease is no stranger to her family considering two of her brothers were previously diagnosed and she realized many of their symptoms sounded similar to her experiences since she was a young girl. That said, Kelley knows her diagnosis isn’t the end of the world, and actually feels a bit better knowing what the issue is because now she can work on getting the proper care to live a long, healthy life.
Since Kelley ended her announcement last week promising to update fans along the way, she’s already back to share how much she’s learned. “I just want to pop in and thank every single one of you that has been messaging me. I know this is a very controversial thing,” she said. “Whether it’s documentaries, books, you name it, I’m looking up everything and trying to just keep my life super, super clean in terms of food, makeup, skincare, detergents, toothpaste, and getting all of the toxins out of my life.” Though the research has been taxing, Kelley admits that the work is paying off as she is starting to feel better.
One of the biggest factors contributing to her healthier lifestyle is her diet. “The smallest thing makes me react so trying to eat foods that don’t cause inflammation,” she said on her Instagram Story, “and anything that would make my body go into attack mode.” Moving forward, Kelley will be implementing a Lyme disease “protocol” in her life towards the end of the month. While she didn’t give too much insight in the exact details, she did reinforce that she’s feeling “so much better” after spending time in bed and on the couch over the last few days, but understands it will take a much greater effort to feel better in the long run.
Kelley is the second member of Bachelor Nation to test positive for the infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, but it seems like she’s coping like a champ. The difference in Kelley’s attitude and emotions towards her diagnosis is also apparent one week later. She was very emotional in her initial announcement, and seems to be stronger and ready to fight today. Though it’s difficult sometimes, learning devastating news is the key one needs to make the changes needed for a longer, happier and healthier lifestyle.
