Bachelor Nation is praising Pardeep Singh for breaking conventions and wearing a non-Western suit on The Bachelorette season 18 in celebration of his Indian heritage. Pardeep was introduced at the premiere as one of 30 contestants vying for Michelle Young on The Bachelorette. Specifically, Pardeep described himself as a 30-year-old neuroscientist from Brooklyn, New York. From the moment he appeared on Michelle’s season, fans have celebrated the fact that a contestant of Indian heritage has been cast on the show.
Unfortunately, Pardeep wasn’t given too much screentime in the actual season, which has been a recurring theme for Asian contestants on The Bachelorette. For reference, the same complaint came up with Joe Park on Clare Crawley and Tayshia Adams’ season, as well as with John Hersey on Katie Thurston’s season. At this point, there is also no indication that producers are actively looking to cast an Asian man as the lead of a season of The Bachelor in the near future, which is a shame.
Nonetheless, Bachelor Nation loved watching Pardeep Singh fully embracing his Indian heritage while he was featured on Michelle Young’s season. Despite being eliminated in episode 2, Pardeep went out in style wearing a non-Western suit that made him stand out from the pack of men standing by his side. On Instagram (full post below), Pardeep highlighted the fact that he wore a Nehru suit. In turn, fans started a Reddit thread (also included below) celebrating Pardeep’s suit. As of this writing, the thread has accumulated over 1,800 upvotes. In the comments, certain fans pointed out that Pardeep might be wearing a Jodhpuri suit rather than a Nehru one. In any case, the point remains that he didn’t wear the traditional Western suit that every single contestant in Bachelorette history has worn.
Pardeep may not have found a love connection with Michelle on the show, but his TV appearance has certainly inspired many viewers and broken the mold when it comes to men’s fashion. A self-proclaimed nerd, Pardeep’s work involves studying the brain and looking for cures for conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Alas, Pardeep also made it clear that he has a “Brooklyn edge” to himself. As a teacher, Michelle is also a very studious person who might’ve been a great match for Pardeep. With that said, things just didn’t work out for them, which is totally fair. Still, fans do wish that he had gotten more screentime on The Bachelorette.
For the time being, Bachelor Nation can hope for Pardeep to get cast on Bachelor In Paradise season 8, or perhaps in a later season. There’s a huge push for more Asian representation in The Bachelor franchise, particularly since these contestants have largely been ignored by producers over the years. Alas, Pardeep is another example of a new generation of Asian contestants who are standing out on the show.
The Bachelorette season 18 airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
