Potential spoilers ahead for Batman #112!
In a preview for Batman #112, the Dark Knight finds himself at the mercy of Scarecrow. The issue, on sale in print and digital September 7, is the next chapter in the Fear State story that has kicked off in the Batman family of titles, and now DC has provided a sneak peak, and it looks as if Batman will be the Fear State’s first victim.
When James Tynion IV took over as the mastermind behind the Batman franchise last year, he and his collaborators introduced a shocking new status quo for Batman and his allies. For months, Mayor Nakamura had been fanning the flames of anti-vigilante sentiment in Gotham. Then, someone attacked Arkham Asylum, killing many guards and inmates, which only made matters worse. In response, the Mayor joined forces with Simon Saint, a noted scientist and defense contractor, to create the Peacekeepers, a para-military force charged with keeping order in Gotham; their first recruit is Sean Mahoney, a corrupt cop who is erroneously believed to be the hero of the Arkham attack. Unbeknownst to Nakamura, and Gotham in general, is that Scarecrow is the power behind the throne, using Saint’s resources as well as the climate of chaos in Gotham to usher in what he calls the “Fear State,” or when a society experiences a trauma so terrible, it forces them to evolve. The march towards the Fear State continues in Batman #112, and it is about to break Batman.
In a special preview posted to DC’s website, readers can see first-hand the effects of the Fear State. Batman, who had been abducted by Scarecrow and subjected to extreme psychological torture, has escaped but is in a state of panic, frantically calling for Oracle or anyone who can help. Readers learn that not only has Scarecrow dosed Batman with the fear toxin, he is also somehow in Batman’s mind. Interspersed with Batman’s story are clips of Simon Saint talking about a new, and better, Gotham.
When it comes to who has the most willpower in the DC Universe, Batman is near the top. Yet here, his torture at Scarecrow’s hands has nearly broken him, giving readers an idea of how intense Fear State will be—if the Scarecrow can almost destroy the Dark Knight’s mind, what chance does the rest of Gotham stand? The torture Scarecrow subjected Batman to is above and beyond anything the Dark Knight has encountered before, and it was only a glimpse at what Scarecrow has planned for Gotham.
The Scarecrow is using Batman as a Guinea pig for his Fear State, and in a preview for Batman #112, the villain has nearly succeeded in breaking him.
