Actor Brendan Fraser was caught playing on his Nintendo Switch console prior to a video call. The celebrity, best known for The Mummy franchise, held a quick chat with a fan – but he couldn’t resist a little playtime before the conversation began.
Since launching in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has gotten plenty of attention from the rich and famous. Animal Crossing: New Horizons in particular has made quite the impact. Game of Thrones actor Maisie Williams discussed her favorite Animal Crossing villagers while promoting H&M. Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood has visited islands in hopes of selling turnips. Screenwriter and journalist Gary Whitta even hosted his own Animal Crossing talk show, “Animal Talking,” to make up for the lack of in-person talk shows taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among those celebrities is Brendan Fraser, as YouTuber Scott Lawrence discovered. Lawrence uploaded a short video of a conversation between himself and the actor on his channel. Prior to the chat itself, however, Fraser was seen using his Nintendo Switch. The device appears to be an original edition, rather than the more recent Switch Lite. He even motioned to Scott to allow him to keep playing for a few more seconds. When prompted by someone off-screen, he put the device down. The conversation then proceeded as normal.
As Scott disclosed in the comments, he is not a professional interviewer. The conversation between him and Fraser was a perk he purchased as part of GalaxyCon. As such, he regrets labeling it as an “interview” in the title of the video. Scott attributed the overall awkwardness of the situation to the delay of the video call, his own partial deafness, and the time limit. The conversation was limited to a scant two minutes.
Close examination shows that Fraser may only be pretending to be playing a game, not unlike a group of Call of Duty players who pretended to be playing Minecraft. His eye movements and lack of solid button presses indicate that he might be putting on an act. He also doesn’t appear to pause the game before jumping into the discussion, and no sound effects can be heard. As for why he might be putting on such an act, some of the comments speculate that Fraser was giving Scott an opening for the conversation. The actor is well-known for being easygoing and kind to his fans, so furnishing Lawrence with a conversation starter in the form of a Switch console might have been his way of breaking the ice.
Whether Fraser was indulging in some gaming or not, the clip proves how popular the Nintendo Switch is. The Switch is nearing the sales record of its two-generation predecessor, the Nintendo Wii. And with more highly-anticipated titles like Metroid Dread and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl on the horizon, sales are sure to continue. And some of those sales may just be from prominent actors like Brendan Fraser.
