Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will be the lead of Captain America 4, and here are the other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters who could appear. Chris Evans played Captain America for 11 years in the MCU but officially passed the shield over to Mackie at the end of Avengers: Endgame. This led Marvel to show Sam’s evolution to truly becoming Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a six-episode Disney+ show that explored the legacy of the shield. Once Sam took on the mantle in the finale, it was quickly revealed that Captain America 4 was in the works.
The fourth entry in the Captain America franchise will be the first to feature Sam Wilson’s Captain America in the lead role. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s head writer Malcolm Spellman is writing Captain America 4‘s script with Dalan Musson. Marvel hasn’t revealed what the story will be, but the movie will presumably continue aspects of the Disney+ show’s story. This will likely mean the return of many MCU characters, especially those who appeared with Sam in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, Anthony Mackie is the only cast member confirmed for Captain America 4.
Sam Wilson might be the lead of Captain America 4, but Marvel Studios has an excellent track record of bringing massive casts to the various MCU movies. There are plenty of characters who should fit into whatever story is told with Sam Wilson next. And while Chris Evans isn’t in Captain America 4 reportedly, here are the MCU characters who could return in support of Mackie’s first solo film.
When looking forward to who else will be in Captain America 4, it is difficult to imagine Sebastian Stan not returning as Bucky Barnes. The man formerly known as the Winter Soldier has appeared in all three previous Captain America movies. Bucky and Sam were friendly thanks to Steve Rogers, but it wasn’t until The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that they became friends independent of him. The decision to have the very last shot of the Disney+ series showing Sam and Bucky together at a party is hopefully telling that Bucky will be right by Sam’s side moving forward. He is the one who helped acquire Sam’s Vibranium Captain America suit after all, so fighting alongside him as he makes that title his own is something Bucky deserves to see.
It is also likely that Wyatt Russell’s John Walker aka U.S. Agent will be back for Captain America 4. After trying to be Captain America and taking a version of the Super-Soldier Serum, Walker ended The Falcon and the Winter Soldier by taking on the U.S. Agent title. The show attempted to partially redeem the character and make him more of an anti-hero for the rest of Phase 4, and that is a role that he could fill in Captain America 4. Whether Sam has to form another uneasy alliance with him to stop a bigger threat or fight him directly because he’s involved somehow, U.S. Agent’s MCU future should line up well for an appearance here.
Captain America 4 could also be where the MCU continues Sharon Carter’s story as Power Broker. The former SHIELD agent/Steve love interest returned in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as part of a reveal that she’s turned bad. Sharon is now pardoned for her involvement in Captain America: Civil War and offered a spot at her old job again. With more access than ever before, Sharon’s days as the Power Broker are just getting started. Now that her villain origin story is established, it could be up to Captain America 4 to flesh out what her actual plan is.
Fans should also expect to see Danny Ramirez return as Joaquín Torres in Captain America 4. He debuted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as a member of the Air Force working with Sam on various missions. Torres became a fan-favorite character in the series, and Marvel already teased him becoming the new Falcon. Sam gave Joaquín his original but broken Falcon wings and the Disney+ show’s finale featured Torres fixing them up. Captain America 4 can be where Torres makes his official debut as the new Falcon and takes his place as Sam’s Captain America sidekick.
It also won’t be surprising if Captain America 4 brings back Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier introduced the famous comic character and his tragic backstory of being the first Black Captain America. His days of fighting crime are well behind him, but Isaiah and Sam formed a strong bond by the end of the Disney+ show. As Sam’s Captain America rises to prominence and deals with various challenges, he could turn to Isaiah again for advice, especially if Steve Rogers is out of the picture. Depending on Captain America 4‘s storyline, the movie could even show flashbacks to Isaiah’s time as Captain America and encounter with the Winter Soldier.
Captain America 4 could also be a time for Marvel Studios to further explore the friendship between Sam and James Rhodes. They are both former military members who recently lost their best friends. But, the MCU has subtly set up that Sam and Rhodey developed a strong friendship, with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier highlighting this more. Don Cheadle very well could be part of Captain America 4‘s cast after starring in Armor Wars, which could even play a part in setting up the movie’s story.
Marvel Studios could also bring Adepero Oduye back as Sarah Wilson for Captain America 4. The episodic format of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gave Marvel time to explore Sam’s family, which took the show to Louisiana so he could visit his sister and her kids. Oduye might not have the biggest role if she returned in Captain America 4, but this could be a chance for Marvel to reveal if anything ever happens between her and Bucky.
It is also possible that Daniel Brühl will return as Baron Zemo in Captain America 4. He’s already been the main villain of Captain America: Civil War but had to be part of an uneasy alliance with Sam and Bucky in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Even though he is locked away in The Raft by the end of the Disney+ series, Zemo could once again hold information that Sam needs in Captain America 4.
Captain America 4 might also be where MCU viewers see Julia Louis-Dreyfus return as Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine once more. She made her debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier recruiting John Walker to her secret team. Contessa already returned for Black Widow‘s post-credits scene too, which revealed Yelena Belova is part of the team too. If Walker appears in Captain America 4, he could do so on Contessa’s orders. Plus, if she is still searching for more powered individuals to join her cause by the time this movie is released, Valentina could recruit one of the movie’s new possible villains.
There is also the chance that Captain America 4 features the return of Eli Bradley (Elijah Richardson). The future Young Avenger debuted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier but didn’t get his powers by then. Captain America 4 could be where Eli begins using Mutant Growth Hormone pills to become Patriot and run around in a red, white, and blue costume like Captain America. Depending on how quickly the MCU continues to build its Young Avengers roster, Eli’s appearance in Captain America 4 could conceivably feature other members of the team too.
