Spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel #32!
Recent actions on the part of Captain Marvel have put her on the outs with Doctor Strange and Marvel’s magical community, and this could jeopardize the life of a Marvel hero. In Captain Marvel #32, on sale now in print and digital, Captain Marvel’s alienation of Doctor Strange may cost Phyla-Vell’s life.
Recently, Captain Marvel was whisked away to a dystopian future where Ove, the son of Namor and the Enchantress, had taken over the world. Captain Marvel defeated him in his time, but Ove slipped back to present day. Knowing that Ove used magic, Captain Marvel set out to find a way to defeat him again—a search that led her to the house (and bed) of Doctor Strange. He tried to instruct Captain Marvel in the ways of magic, but she didn’t have much of an affinity for it. During the final confrontation with Ove, Captain Marvel used a spell to rob him of his magic. While this was instrumental in defeating Ove, robbing another magic user of their abilities makes one a pariah, and that is exactly what Captain Marvel has become. Captain Marvel #32 is written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Sergio Davila, inks by Sean Parsons, colors by Jesus Aburtov and letters by Clayton Cowles.
The issue opens with Captain Marvel being attacked by a mysterious being wearing a darker version of her suit. The two fight back and forth, and eventually Captain Marvel gets the upper hand, seriously injuring her opponent. But Captain Marvel is not a murderer and takes her opponent to Tony Stark, hoping he can save her. Tony is out of his element but tries anyway; her foe is revealed to be Phyla-Vell, of the Guardians of the Galaxy and a former Captain Marvel, who has been taken over by the suit.
In cases such as this, where medical help is needed, most heroes turn to Doctor Strange. Magic aside, Doctor Strange was once a world-renowned surgeon and retains much of that knowledge. However, thanks to her being on the outs with Doctor Strange and the magical community as a whole, Captain Marvel took Phyla-Vell to Tony Stark instead. While Tony has awesome technology, and a team of top doctors, at his disposal, he still does not have Doctor Strange’s knowledge—making him practically useless in this situation. Phyla-Vell will most likely survive, but if Doctor Strange had been her first option, her odds of survival would greatly increase.
Captain Marvel‘s current feud with Doctor Strange doesn’t seem to have an end in sight and on account of this other Marvel heroes are starting to pay the price for Carol’s decisions.
