Ingo Beck channels his inner law-bringer with two limited-time skins of Judge Joseph Dredd, who will feature in a store bundle later on during Season Five Reloaded for Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War and Warzone. The events of Black Ops Cold War take place during the 1980s, and this has informed the decision of developer Treyarch and company to bring characters embodying pop culture of the time into Cold War and Warzone. Rambo from the iconic line of action movies and John McClane from the Die Hard films joined the game as purchasable skins as a part of this decision.
Relying on crossovers from popular media with a penchant for action has become a recent theme for Treyarch and the CoD franchise. In May this past year, a Reddit leak foreshadowed the arrivals of McClane and Rambo in the form of screenshots showing the characters’ renderings on the Operator select screen, and Activision confirmed their arrival soon after with their own screenshots. Both icons arrived guns-blazing with their own finishers and blueprints for Legendary Weapons. Other skins have introduced horror movie antagonists like Billy, the puppet from Saw, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s Leatherface, sans chainsaw.
The Call of Duty website has announced the new Judge Dredd skins as alts for Operator Beck of the Warsaw Pact. Dredd will bring his patented justice to Cold War and Warzone at some point during Season Five, though CoD has not confirmed an exact date. Dredd’s bundle includes a standard full-color skin of the character and a black-and-white cel-shaded version harkening back to his comic book roots. Like other DLC CoD skins, the Tracer Pack: Judge Dredd bundle will also equip Beck with the Weapon Blueprints for Dredd’s “Arbitrator” Assault Rifle, “Lawgiver” Pistol and “Quick Judgement” SMG. Dredd will come equipped with an “Incendiary” finisher to round off his kit. In addition to the Dredd bundle, the roadmap for Call of Duty Season Five Reloaded has elaborated on a new game mode, Outbreak Region map and a new melee weapon: the Sai.
Activision and Treyarch are executing a clear cross-culture marketing strategy by appealing to the fanbases of these epic movie franchises, some having more crossover feasibility than others. Dredd follows in this trend of 80s action movie nolstalgia. After heavy hinting by the CoD Twitter page, McClane and Rambo found their way into respective trailers to officially confirm their arrivals. But rumors have also circulated claiming that the Terminator will join Call of Duty. That has yet to transpire, but would make for another fun inclusion.
It may feel surreal to some CoD fans to see McClane, Rambo and Dredd shooting each other up in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone. But given how the majority of skins have minimal impact on the game balance itself, Activision has only given itself a window to make more money and invite new fans to the series. Gamers will have to keep an eye for future hints to see who might be next to join the roster.
