As a Marvel movie, it’s all but guaranteed that Shang-Chi has a post-credits scene. Phase 4’s launch certainly didn’t go according to plan, but Marvel Studios managed to keep things relatively on track despite the ongoing pandemic. And now with one movie and three TV shows out of the way, along with another series continuing on Disney+, the MCU finally got around to introducing a brand-new character in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Simu Liu, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings sees the titular superhero confront his buried past and face his father, Wenwu (Tony Leung), the real Mandarin. The Iron Man trilogy spent a great deal of time introducing the Ten Rings organization as well as its leader, the Mandarin, but Iron Man 3 ended by revealing Trevor Slattery wasn’t the Mandarin at all. Now, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings picks up on that storyline and reveals who the Mandarin really is – and what the Ten Rings really are.
It all culminates in a grand story that leaves room for the future, and setting up that future are TWO Shang-Chi post-credits scenes – one mid-credits and one end-credits. The mid-credits scene comes immediately after the main cast is listed, then the post-credits scene comes at the very end of the credits, in classic Marvel fashion – though it’s always good to see the names of everyone who came together to make this movie possible, along with just how many of them there were.
Shang-Chi’s tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is only just getting underway. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a big and powerful film, and the way the story unfolds towards the end, Marvel Studios has clearly left the door open to bring back Simu Liu and Awkwafina in the future. Without giving away any spoilers about what happens in either credits scene, both are things fans of the MCU won’t want to miss. One lays the foundation for a future film and another wraps up a loose end regarding the core story of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Undoubtedly, Shang-Chi‘s post-credits scenes will spawn even more discussion points for fans, especially those who’ve been clamoring for real Phase 4 content on the big screen; Black Widow, though the first theatrical installment in Marvel’s new phase, was still very much a prequel movie set during the events of Phase 3. Here, the Shang-Chi post-credits scenes look to the future of the character and the franchise.
