Fans love Gilmore Girls for its well-written characters, and the series is famous for its super fast dialogue. In fact, the actors worked with a dialogue coach because while a traditional TV script is 40 to 50 pages, the ones for Gilmore Girls were 80 pages, according to Vox. There are definitely scenes that fans want to pause and rewind because Rory, Lorelai, and their family, friends, and love interests speak a mile a minute.
Rory, in particular, has some beloved quotes on the series, whether she’s talking about her new life at Chilton, telling Dean how she feels, or talking to her mom about the problems in her life. These Rory quotes definitely tug at fans’ heartstrings and make them feel just as emotional as she is.
10 “I can’t be late on my first day of school. Do you know what happens to people when they’re late on their first day?”
The season 1 episode “The Lorelais’ First Day At Chilton” is a fan favorite, and it involves Rory and Lorelai leaving the house in a mad rush so Rory can make a good impression at this fancy private school. Rory says this quote when she’s trying to get her mom to hurry along.
Viewers remember this episode because of Lorelai’s famously awkward outfit, as no one can forget that Lorelai wears boots, a tie-dye t-shirt, and jean shorts to meet Headmaster Charleston. Rory’s emotional quote stands out, too, as she takes pride in her organizational skills and work ethic. She doesn’t want anyone to think that she doesn’t care about doing well. While Rory cares a lot here, she does find her groove, making it less significant than some other quotes.
9 “A ‘D’ at Stars Hollow is like an ‘F’ at Chilton. It’s worse, it’s like a ‘G’ or a… ‘W.'”
In the season 1 episode “The Deer Hunters,” Rory gets a “D” on an English test and feels so bad about herself that she studies so hard for another exam that Lorelai is seriously worried about her.
When Rory explains her poor grade to her mom, she says this quote, and she sounds so heartbroken that fans feel awful for her. While some students would shrug and say that bad grades happen, Rory takes this personally and begins to spiral, wondering if she can make it at her new school. She’s suddenly scared of not measuring up, and it feels like the end of the world.
8 “I just want you to know…I really wanted you to be my stepfather.”
Gilmore Girls fans know that Max and Lorelai’s wedding never happens, but Rory still knows that Max would have made a great stepparent.
Rory’s heartfelt statement to Max Medina means even more since fans know that it’s hard for her to express her feelings, at least during her high school years. She’s shy and quiet and worried about saying the wrong thing, especially to a teacher. But Rory wants Max to know that she cares about him and that she feels badly about what happened. This quote doesn’t compare to Rory talking about her own love life, though.
7 “Because I love you, you idiot!”
The season 1 finale features one of the most romantic moments on Gilmore Girls as Rory is able to tell Dean that she loves him.
This is not only a fan favorite scene but one that starts the Rory and Dean love story all over again. When Dean shares his love for Rory on their three-month anniversary, she’s too scared to say it, and he’s humiliated and breaks up with her. Lorelai helps Rory feel comfortable and able to share her feelings, and fans cheer when Rory is finally ready. When she confesses her love to Dean, there’s so much emotion behind her words.
6 “As she guided me through these incredible eighteen years, I don’t know if she ever realized that the person I most wanted to be was her.”
It’s hard not to cry when Rory graduates from Chilton, particularly when she mentions her mom in her valedictorian speech. She talks about loving reading and then shares her love for Lorelai, who can’t stop sobbing after she hears these words, along with Sookie and Luke.
Rory gets emotional when speaking, making this a quote that has a lot of significance and feeling behind it. While there are quotes that are mean more, since Rory tends to feel the most when talking about her love life, it’s nice to see her reflect on growing up with such a caring and fun mom.
5 “I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you about it first. I… I know I promised I would, but – I swear I didn’t know that this was going to happen!”
I mean, I didn’t know that he was going to show up tonight and it just happened! It’s awful for you to find out like this, I know, but everything’s okay! I’m okay!
In the season 4 episode “Raincoats And Recipes,” Rory loses her virginity to Dean, and then tells Lorelai what happened.
Since Rory has made a mistake, and she knows that she can’t take it back, this quote has more sadness than some of her other memorable ones. Viewers see Rory starting to veer away from her perfectionism, as she’s starting to do what feels right to her, even though fans think that she’s messing up.
4 “Are we okay? I mean, that wasn’t exactly my proudest moment.”
Rory says this to Lorelai after Lorelai saw Rory and Logan kissing, just one dramatic thing that happened at Richard and Emily’s vow renewal.
Rory hates when she doesn’t measure up to other people’s expectations, and her mom and grandparents’ opinions mean the most to her, making this a time when she sounds super emotional. Rory can tell that this wasn’t the best behavior and she feels badly, but thankfully, Lorelai assures her that it’s not that bad.
3 “And it just sucks, you know, because I graduated today. This was supposed to be a happy day in my life, and now every time I look back on it, I’m going to think of this horrible thing that happened.”
Fans don’t think that Rory will accept Logan’s proposal, but this is still a tough moment at the end of season 7. When Rory tells her mom what happened, she’s heartbroken, missing Logan already.
When Rory shares her disappointment over having the proposal outshine her big graduation day, she sounds sadder than ever, making this a quote to remember. She wishes that things could have worked out differently, but she knows that she has to look to her future.
2 “My love life is a disaster.”
In A Year In The Life, Rory’s dating Paul, who she keeps forgetting about, and having an affair with Logan. In this powerful scene, Rory realizes that this isn’t where she thought she would end up, and she knows that her younger self would have a problem with her life.
Rory sounds so upset when speaking that this is another incredibly heartfelt quote. Viewers can tell that she really doesn’t know how she messed her entire love life up. While fans don’t love seeing Rory in the revival and they think she should make better choices, they can still sympathize with the character they have loved for so long, and they wish she could fix everything.
1 “No, you don’t! You don’t deserve it! I just… I’m in love with him. Despite all the bad he’s done, I can’t help it, I’m in love with him.”
Rory says this quote in season 6 when Jess visits and Logan isn’t polite to him at all. Jess says that he isn’t happy with the way that things are going for Rory.
This is a good example of Jess’s improvement as a character and it’s definitely Rory’s most emotional quote. Seeing her current reality from Jess’s perspective, she feels awful, and she knows that she has to make her life okay again. She also admits that Logan can be problematic but knows that she loves him and has to work through her strong feelings for him.
