Kit Harington’s Eternals character is an important part of Phase 4 and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future. The upcoming MCU movie directed by Chloé Zhao features one of Marvel’s best ensembles to date. Gemma Chan and Richard Madden play the two lead roles, Sersi and Ikaris, and they are surrounded by Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, and many more playing Marvel’s powerful Eternals team. One of the biggest names in Eternals‘ cast is former Game of Thrones star Kit Harington.
The addition of Harington is one of many reasons why audiences are excited about Eternals, as the Jon Snow actor is scheduled to play Dane Whitman, a.k.a. Black Knight. Despite his popularity, however, Harington has been almost completely absent from the film’s marketing. His name is featured on all the posters, but his face has yet to be featured on any of them. Meanwhile, the glimpses of his role in the movie have been quite small and unrevealing, which could be the result of Black Knight’s questionable role in Eternals. The only main detail known about Harington’s Whitman to date is that he and Sersi have a romantic connection, and it is becoming increasingly unclear if Dane will actually suit up as Black Knight in the movie.
Even if Kit Harington has a small role in Eternals, there is no doubt that his character will be a big part of MCU Phase 4 and beyond. Harington is too big of a name for Marvel to keep on the sidelines, and comic book readers know just how prominent of a role Dane Whitman can take on. He was a core member of the Avengers with Sersi during the 1990s and even led the team for some time. Whitman’s Black Knight also served as a member of MI-13, Captain Britain’s team meant to deal with supernatural and mystical threats. While Eternals might not see Dane get involved in the fight against the Deviants, or even become the Black Knight (yet), there is the potential for him to be a leading member of various teams throughout Phase 4.
Dane’s encounter with the Eternals and Deviants may be what pushes him toward his future as Black Knight. Whether through necessity or by discovery, he could soon learn the truth about his lineage, obtain the powerful Ebony Blade sword, and accept the curse tying him to the weapon in following his comic book arc. In the comics, Dane is the nephew of Marvel’s original Black Knight, Nathan Garrett, who was a major Avengers villain. Once Dane received the Ebony Blade and its powers, his time as Black Knight saw him ditch the mantle’s villainous past to become a hero. The Avengers finally accepted him as a true ally once Dane helped fight Kang the Conqueror, who is now in the MCU. Since Loki introduced He Who Remains, a variant of Kang, Harington’s Black Knight could be among the many MCU characters who eventually fight the time-traveling conqueror.
The introduction of Black Knight in Eternals also comes at a time when the MCU is expanding its magical and supernatural footprint. The Ebony Blade’s magical properties mean Harington could return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to help protect the world from another massive threat. This appearance might even be the latest step Marvel takes to building a proper Defenders team. It could even be through here that Black Knight’s time in another universe as the leader of UltraForce can be achieved. Harington could also appear as Black Knight in Secret Invasion, just as Dane Whitman did in the comics. The trailers for Eternals definitely keep his exact role secretive, but fans of Harington should not doubt that he’s important to MCU Phase 4.
