The upcoming Princess Diana biopic Spencer will be released in theaters on November 5. Starring Kristen Stewart, Spencer will follow Diana, Princess of Wales (née Spencer), during Christmas of 1991 as she considers her fraying relationship with Prince Charles. Chilean director Pablo Larraín will helm the picture. His last biopic Jackie won Natalie Portman an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
The November release date was confirmed by NEON on Twitter, who also tagging Topic Studios in the post. The two studios have jointly acquired the U.S. rights to the drama. Spencer began filming in January 2021. The biopic will also have its world premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival in September.
News broke in June 2020 that Stewart was cast as the beloved “people’s princess.” A first look image of Stewart in Spencer was released in January, with the actress donning Diana’s signature feathery blond hair. Spencer isn’t Stewart’s first time playing the title role of a biopic; in 2019, she starred in Seberg, a political thriller about the actress Jane Seberg. To prepare for her latest portrayal of an iconic figure, Stewart watched the fourth season of The Crown, which featured Emma Corrin as Diana.
Recent portrayals of Princess Diana and Prince Charles have proven to be awards season magnets; Corrin and Josh O’Connor won Golden Globes for The Crown. Stewart, already a decorated acting veteran herself, is sure to pick up accolades for her iteration of Princess Diana. Joining her as Charles is Jack Farthing, and rounding out the Spencer cast is Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, and Sean Harris.
