Warning! SPOILERS for Marvel’s What If…?
According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, What If…?’s second season will include movies from Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney+’s latest animated series What If…? is based on the comic book series of the same name, re-imagining classic MCU stories had key events played out differently. So far, the first season remixed 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger by having Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) take the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers and explored T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) effect on the universe had he became Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill.
While big names like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Tom Holland, Dave Bautista, and Scarlett Johansson don’t reprise their respective roles in voice capacity, Marvel Studios was able to sign an impressive roster for the series. The long list of returning MCU performers includes Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Danai Gurira, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, Evangeline Lilly, Jeff Goldblum, Jeremy Renner, Jon Favreau, Josh Brolin, Karen Gillan, Kat Dennings, Kurt Russell, Leslie Bibb, Mark Ruffalo, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Douglas, Michael Rooker, Natalie Portman, Neal McDonough, Ophelia Lovibond, Paul Bettany, Sebastian Stan, and Tom Hiddleston—which only facilitates What If…?’s ability explore fully-realized versions of MCU storylines preceding Phase 4. It’s already been confirmed for a season 2 with characters like Captain Carter returning.
In a Screen Rant exclusive interview from the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings press junket, Kevin Feige talked about season 2 of What If…?. In particular, he was asked how Phase 4 and the exploration of the multiverse will tie into What If….? Read what he had to say below:
“That’s the fun thing about having the What If…? series now; we can explore questions just like that,” said Feige. “And I will say, just as season 1 is tapping into films and storylines from the MCU that you’ve seen up to this point, season 2 will definitely incorporate movies from Phase 4.”
What If…?’s first episode ended with Captain Carter being transported 70 years into the future, similar to how Captain America was found frozen at the end of The First Avenger. What If…?’s second episode saw Ego (Kurt Russell) pick up an ill-equipped Peter Quill from his job at Dairy Queen; leading Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) to comment on how this may mean the end of the world. When What If…? was first announced, it was thought to be merely an anthology series. However, the events of Disney+’s Loki, in which the Scared Timeline is liberated and multiversal chaos ensues, have effectively established everything seen in What If…? as canon.
Aside from the MCU’s small-screen outings, the only Phase 4 movie to be released has been Black Widow. Next up is Shang-Chi, Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Most of those films (if not all), will somehow tie into multiversal events. Alternate versions of those stories will likely be seen in season 2. What If..? has teased the Watcher’s less-than-impartial status and the assembling of the Guardians of the Multiverse—heroes who should aid others across the MCU slate. Episode details have revealed that Doctor Strange/Sorcerer Supreme will be facing off with a darker version of himself. That said, the Strange fans know could make an appearance related to his upcoming film.
