One of the most favored ways to judge the personalities of Marvel Cinematic Universe characters has been through the use of the sorting system from Hogwarts school in the Harry Potter series. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings brought several new heroes and villains to the MCU and all of them displayed attributes like intelligence, bravery, ambition, and loyalty.
Hogwarts students are sorted into Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff should their personality traits fit the house’s description, which can be applied to the Shang-Chi characters as well. The story of the titular character protecting the village of Ta Lo from his father, Wenwu, and the Dweller-in-Darkness provided a platform for many attributes to be displayed and it’s worth taking a look into which house everyone would be assigned.
9 Xialing: Gryffindor
Gryffindors are known for their fiery personalities and resourcefulness, while also being highly emotional toward familial bonds. Xialing ticks all the boxes here, having started her own empire of the fight club after her father had refused to let her join the Ten Rings organization.
In addition, Xialing carried the Gryffindor trait of loyalty, as she was willing to sacrifice herself when Shang-Chi attempted to save her from the Dweller-in-Darkness. Her most striking attribute was her neverending determination, which would have made her an easy sorting for Gryffindor house.
8 Trevor Slattery: Hufflepuff
Trevor’s reappearance has set Twitter in a tizzy over Shang-Chi, as he came back to be imprisoned by the real Mandarin. His personality was seen better here than in Iron Man 3, with Trevor turning out to be a loyal man who could forge friendships wherever he went.
This ties in with the Hufflepuff trait of being loyal and accustoming, along with making the best of where they find themselves to be. Trevor only wanted to be accepted and found this in Ta Lo, where he didn’t abandon the group even though he was scared of meeting his demise.
7 Ying Li: Gryffindor
Ying Li was brave until the end, giving her life to ensure her children remained safe. She was like Gryffindor’s Lily Potter in many ways, showcasing qualities of sacrifice, determination, and love. She also had the kind of influence Lily had on James Potter as Ying Li managed to make Wenwu change his ways.
The most positive Gryffindors don’t chase personal glory and are content with feeling accomplished by themselves, with Ying Li being this way as she was respectful toward Wenwu even after defeating him. She made sure to pass down her qualities to her children, which ties into Gryffindors keeping their family close.
6 Wenwu: Slytherin
While Wenwu’s portrayal was very different from what comic book fans know about the Mandarin, he was similar in his self-serving mentality. Slytherins largely care about themselves and extend this toward the ones they love, such as their family members.
Wenwu had no empathy toward people outside of his wife and children, and it was only for his family that he could ever make any sacrifice. Slytherins are also very ambitious with grand plans, which Wenwu had before he met Ying Li as his original quest was for power.
5 Razor Fist: Gryffindor
The character is one of Shang-Chi’s frequent foes in the comics but his adaptation changed him to be more layered. Razor Fist started out as an enemy looking to take down the heroes, only to then join them to fight against the Dweller-in-Darkness. Despite being a villain, for the most part, Razor Fist showed the Gryffindor attribute of bravery as he never backed down from a fight.
Gryffindors also tend to be foolhardy with their own abilities and Razor Fist initially refused to accept Ta Lo’s help as he thought he and his men were strong enough to take on the Dweller-in-Darkness. He was also chivalrous to a degree as he honored the alliance he made with Ta Lo after the battle.
4 Wong: Ravenclaw
Wong only had a cameo role in the movie and still managed to show off the attributes of Ravenclaw house. His clever mindset was shown in his fight with Abomination, where he opened up a portal to make the latter punch and knock out himself.
Ravenclaws are excellent planners who seek to learn as much as they can, which Wong did by the movie’s end when he assembled Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, and Bruce Banner to find out more about the Ten Rings to prepare for a possible threat to come.
3 Katy: Hufflepuff
Katy is one of the rare personalities who would work well in multiple houses, having courage like a Gryffindor, wisdom of a Ravenclaw, and loyalty like a Hufflepuff. However, it’s the latter trait that was the most dominant in her and the Sorting Hat would likely see that way.
No matter what the odds were and how dangerous the foes became, Katy didn’t leave Shang-Chi’s side due to how much she treasured their friendship. She wasn’t exceptionally gifted in abilities as the other characters but made up for this through Hufflepuff’s attribute of hard work and patience to learn archery and make a vital contribution in the final battle.
2 Ying Nan: Ravenclaw
The wisest people are usually Ravenclaws, as they see things that others tend to overlook because of their emotions. Ying Nan displayed her wisdom when she taught Shang-Chi to accept the responsibility toward Ta Lo he was always running away from.
Ravenclaws do value their families but know when to separate their duty from emotional connections and Ying Nan did much the same when she greeted Shang-Chi and Xialing but quickly got around to training them for the fight to come. She also didn’t hand-hold Shang-Chi toward his goal as it was her intention to impart her wisdom and let her nephew make his own decisions.
1 Shang-Chi: Hufflepuff
In the lead-up to the movie, there were many questions about Shang-Chi from fans who wondered what kind of person he was. As it turned out, Shang-Chi was an everyman, in that he valued love and support and didn’t have great ambitions or an ego.
Hufflepuffs are the kind of people who are more than happy to be part of the crowd, which Shang-Chi sought to do after he escaped China. Hufflepuffs aren’t the bragging type either, which suits Shang-Chi as well as he never made his incredible skills known to Katy and left the Ten Rings organization to his sister despite being the natural successor.
