Warning! Spoilers for the My Hero Academia manga ahead!
A limited-edition My Hero Academia figurine shows Deku channeling Marvel antihero Venom in a terrifying new look. As of late, the manga’s tone has shifted dramatically since the start of the new arc, including Deku taking on a new form since leaving UA. This new form is a result of All For One’s current hold on quirk society and his unknown plans for Deku. The villain leeches off of heroes and villains, much like a symbiote in Marvel Comics.
After escaping from Tartarus prison along with several other villains, All For One has spread his tyranny throughout Japan and set his sights beyond its borders. Deku is one of the few heroes left and with every villain in town looking for him, has separated himself from all that he loves for fear of bringing on danger. His new quirk Blackwhip was one of the first quirks to manifest since his talk with the predecessors of One For All. With Blackwhip, Deku can generate long black extensions that can grab hold of things or swing himself through the air (like a spider or symbiote). This quirk is enhanced by emotion or rage, which Deku uses a lot during his time alone in the city.
The Jump GIGA 2021 autumn magazine announced the new “Black Deku” figurine is set to release in June 2022. The magazine also had signup forms for pre-orders of the limited edition figurine and Japan reseller Aitai Kuji will also be helping fans outside of Japan with purchasing the figurine on their official website. The reseller shared on Twitter a closer look at the figure with Deku’s hero costume completely covered in black and his new quirk Blackwhip fully activated. This marks a complete change from his adorable green bunny ear costume that his mother made him, which only adds to the power All For One has over the heroes and villains.
In chapter 330, All For One reveals his true intentions to Shigaraki after his match with the American number one hero Star and Strip. All For One informs Shigaraki that his quirk transformation is nearly complete and that soon he’ll take control over his body similar to how a symbiote takes over its host. Just like Shigaraki, All For One’s symbiote takeover of Deku was brought on psychologically by fear and caused the young hero to push away all of his friends. Deku began to look so different to the point where he was drawn in a completely different art style within the series. This was brought to the attention later by Bakugo who is known to break the fourth wall.
The kind words from his friends and Ochaco’s speech rang deeply within Deku’s heart, causing his true self to reemerge from the darkness he’d taken on. Just like how sound and heat are weaknesses to symbiotes, Class 1A’s friendship was what shook the fear off of Deku and brought him back to his original self. The influence of Marvel heroes like Spider-Man and Venom are very prominent in My Hero Academia and the new “Black Deku” figurine will most likely cause excitement for fans of the series.
