Plants in Oxygen Not Included require a variety of conditions to grow, and it can often be difficult to build combined farms that meet the needs of more than one plant. Factors like atmosphere, temperature, liquid intake, and fertilizers make farming one of the most intricately balanced elements of the game.
Oxygen Not Included is a game that demands optimized output and consolidation of resources wherever possible. When it comes to farming, meeting this goal is fairly complex. Dasha saltvine and balm lily are two of the exceptions, as their specific conditions allow them to be planted in the same chamber.
First, neither dasha saltvines nor balm lilies require liquid, and both can be planted in standard farm tiles in Oxygen Not Included. There is also a significant overlap in their comfortable temperature ranges. Dasha saltvines like the temperature between -25 and 50 C, while balm lilies perfect to sit between 35 and 85 C. As long as temperatures in the chamber are kept between 35 and 50 C, these plants can coexist quite comfortably. Temperature is just one reason why these plants thrive in a chamber with a chlorine gas vent.
Both dasha saltvines and balm lilies require a chlorine atmosphere. Although chlorine is a great disinfectant in Oxygen Not Included, it is unbreathable, and dupes moving through it without an atmo suit will be forced to hold their breath, and may even be subjected to the “Eye Irritation” debuff, reducing their athletics. For these reasons, keeping chlorine contained in an area through which the dupes will not have to move is a good idea. Having one chamber filled with chlorine is far preferable to the hassle and danger of moving it around the player’s asteroid.
Gases can be difficult to manage in Oxygen Not Included, especially for new players. The best way to ensure that a chamber is filled with a renewable source of chlorine is to build it around a chlorine gas vent. Building the farm tiles five or six tiles away from the chlorine gas vent ensures that the crops will not overheat while the vent is releasing chlorine, which it does at the perfect temperature to fill a chamber and keep the plants at the right temperature and in the right atmosphere.
Duplicants can plant in farm tiles from the bottom side, which means that automated farms can be built around hazardous atmospheres in Oxygen Not Included, if the farm tiles are built as the top and bottom walls of the chamber. This is perfect for the combination of dasha slatvies and balm lilies, as the former must be planted upside down and the latter must be planted right side up. Plants cannot be harvested from the bottoms of farm tiles, but they will drop out of the farm tiles four cycles after becoming ready to harvest. This extends the growth cycle, but the reward of full automation is worth the wait.
The player can optimize this automated farm in Oxygen Not Included by building a row of 17 farm tiles as a chamber floor, and 17 inverted farm tiles as a chamber ceiling, with 7 empty tiles between them. One tile floating in the center of the chamber can hold a conveyor loader, and one auto-sweeper will fit perfectly on each side, with its range overlapping in the center. This will ensure that all plant products will be swept up and out of the chamber with zero dupe contact. The player will also need to include a conveyor chute connected to an outside conveyor loader that will allow them to drop in sand, and even unwanted bleach stone. The auto-sweepers will fertilize the dasha saltvine automatically, and since there are no liquid requirements and no gas needs to be pumped in, this chamber can sit comfortably wherever a chlorine gas vent can be found.
