Marvel’s Eternals introduces fans to a whole new team of superheroes when the movie premieres on November 5. The film follows the immortal alien race as they observe humanity throughout time – until they are forced to interfere. At the center of Eternals is a love story between Ikaris, played by Game of Thrones star Richard Madden, and Sersi played by Crazy Rich Asians star and Marvel alum Gemma Chan.
Madden and Chan spoke to Screen Rant about working together, the excitement of being in a Marvel movie, and reuniting with old friends.
Screen Rant: I loved this movie so much. I love the cosmic side of the MCU, and this was just awesome. Richard, you being in love with someone named Sersi – different spelling, but the irony is not lost on me.
Richard Madden: Yes! And I was [with Kit Harington] as well, so we got the references.
You’re also reunited with Kit Harington. Maybe I’m reading into it, but there were a lot of references in this movie, and I felt like you two coming face-to-face was the Stark reunion that we didn’t get. Did you two have that conversation?
Richard Madden: Not really, I think we kind of forgot. Me and Kit have been friends for so long, and Gemma too. We’ve gone out and had dinner as well when we were shooting, so suddenly the three of us were kind of standing on the street chatting and it’s like, “Oh God, we’re at work! We’re not actually just the three of us being friends here.”
That’s what kind of was a bit throwing us off, rather than any Game of Thrones version of things. It’s just that I was there with my friends at work.
Gemma, you’ve played not one but two characters in the MCU, and we are so blessed. How did you react when you were approached for an even bigger center stage role in Eternals?
Gemma Chan: To be honest, I was as surprised as anyone else. I was not expected to be back. But yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. I obviously jumped at the chance, and to get to work with Richard and the rest of the amazing cast, it’s great.
And you know what? This time I don’t have to be painted blue, so I didn’t have to do the 2:30 AM or 3 AM call times to [spend] four hours sprayed with body paint. So, that was good.
I am beyond thrilled to see what’s next as Phase 4 comes together. Has either of you given any thought to which Avenger or existing Marvel character you’d love to team up with or fight in a future project?
Richard Madden: Not really. I think with these characters I love and watch, I’d love to see Ikaris, Thor, and Iron Man all eating pizza and having a beer. I think that would be quite a fun scene to watch, but that’s as far as I’ve thought about it.
Gemma Chan: I think Sersi and Valkyrie would have a pretty fun night on the town.
We had the incredible Hall H moment with all of you at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, and we are now at the premiere of the movie and fans are cosplaying, and it’s so exciting. Have you had a fan encounter yet that has really stuck with you in terms of being a part of Eternals and the Marvel world?
Richard Madden: Not yet, because it’s only just beginning, sadly. But I’m looking forward to having them. I mean, I saw some people with amazing costumes at the premiere already, and that’s just from posters and pictures we’ve seen. There’s a lot of really talented people out there. I can’t wait to see what they do.
Gemma Chan: At the premiere, there were three people dressed as Sersi already. It was amazing, what they do with that. Yeah, it was incredible.
