Ryan Reynolds used his experience from his Deadpool casting story to back LeVar Burton as the next choice for the host of Jeopardy. Alex Trebek’s name has become synonymous with Jeopardy after decades of leading the quiz show. Sadly, Trebek passed away from pancreatic cancer in November of last year, leaving behind some uncertainty as to how the show would proceed.
Trebek’s death left show producers with the challenging task of finding someone to carry on the legacy that he left behind. Earlier this month it looked as if they had finally found their answer when Mike Richards was named as Trebek’s replacement. The announcement was met with mixed emotions, and it did not take long before allegations began to surface against the new host. Richards allegedly made several derogatory and sexist comments in a podcast conversation. The backlash caused the newly appointed host to step down after just nine days, once again leaving a vacancy to be filled.
LeVar Burton was among several notable celebrities that were originally passed over in favor of Richards. Now, it appears that he may have a second chance at the role, and support for his casting continues to grow. Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds used his influence on Twitter to show his support of Burton. Take a look below to see how Reynolds used his experience of being cast as Deadpool to encourage Burton’s pursuit to become the next Jeopardy host:
Reynolds’ post details how public opinion helped land him one of his largest roles. Similar to the decision made by Sony Television executives to initially reject Burton, studios did not seriously consider Reynolds for the position of Wade Wilson until admirers stepped in to show their support. Many have already done the same for Burton on social media, which he acknowledged in a post following Jeopardy‘s announcement to hire Reynolds.
The support for Burton is not completely unfounded. He is no stranger to being a television host and has even already made his debut as a guest host on Jeopardy. Burton led the long-running PBS series, Reading Rainbow, and received 15 nominations for outstanding host of a children’s show. For many who grew up in the ’80s or ’90s, Burton will bring a sense of nostalgia along with his successful hosting skills. With endorsements by celebrities like Reynolds and a large online petition, maybe Burton will find himself behind Jeopardy‘s podium yet again in the near future.
