A new IMAX poster for Shang-Chi highlights the MCU’s multiple dragons. Coming off the heels of Black Widow‘s success, Shang-Chi will be Marvel’s first film to star a predominantly Asian and Asian-American cast and their second Phase 4 film of the year that will attempt to lure audiences back into theaters. Simu Liu, known previously for the sitcom Kim’s Convenience, stars as the titular hero, Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu.
Along with his best friend, Katy (Awkwafina), and his estranged sister, Xialing (Meng’er Zhang), Shang-Chi will be forced to confront his past after years of a normal life as a parking valet in San Francisco. Tony Leung stars as his father, Wenwu, also known as The Mandarin, who attempts to lure his son back into the criminal organization known as the Ten Rings. Florian Munteanu stars as the secondary villain, Razor Fist. Now, a new piece of marketing material is highlighting these characters and the film’s multiple mythic creatures.
Marvel has unveiled an all-new IMAX poster for Shang-Chi featuring Liu’s title character, Awkwafina’s Katy wielding a bow and arrow, Leung’s Wenwu, Munteanu’s Razor Fist, and Xialing. In addition to these human characters, the poster’s exclusive art is a pretty strong indication that the film will introduce not one, but two dragons to the MCU. See the new IMAX poster below:
With Shang-Chi‘s release date coming up early next month on September 3, the Marvel film’s marketing campaign is currently in full swing, as it has gotten a few new posters and trailers in the past few days. One of which was a TV spot that offered a look at the film’s flaming dragons in live-action. The first glimpse at one of these dragons came in a trailer, as Liu’s character is seen swimming alongside it. This creature, supposedly known as The Great Protector, can be seen on the left in the poster, but that begs the question of who the mystery dragon on the right may be.
The Great Protector’s design seems to be largely inspired by that of a classic Chinese dragon, also known as a Lung, which are typically depicted as snake-like with four legs and no wings. The dragon on the right side of this poster clearly does not resemble a Lung, as it is equipped with large wings. The first guess as to who this mystery dragon might be is Fin Fang Foom, whom fans have wanted to see appear in the MCU for quite some time now. Next month, all questions regarding Shang-Chi‘s multiple dragons will finally be answered.
