Simu Liu has posted a heartfelt thank you to his fellow cast mates and crew on Instagram following the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Liu plays the titular character, son of the leader of the mysterious Ten Rings organization, who must return to face his father. Released on September 3, the film makes history as the first film in the MCU to feature an Asian lead, with the film receiving praise for its handling and exploration of Asian culture and representation.
Shang-Chi has seen much success already, with an impressive Thursday night opening box office of $8.8 million and critics praising the film highly for its performances, representation, and impressive choreography. The hero, as portrayed by Simu Liu, has received a warm welcome from fans, critics, and fellow Avengers such as Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and more recently Brie Larson through Twitter, who congratulated Liu on his success. Now, Liu has in turn taken to social media to thank everyone behind the hit film.
In an Instagram post, Liu posted a piece of artwork featuring two children looking up to his hero in awe, alongside a heartfelt letter. In his message, Liu raised the importance behind Shang-Chi as a celebration of Asian culture, while also offering representation to audiences through the first Asian superhero lead in the MCU. Liu then proceeded to thank director Destin Daniel Cretton and cast mates Awkwafina, Benedict Wong, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Ronny Chieng, Florian Munteanu, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung. Liu finally thanked Disney for the company’s support behind the film, artist JARVIS for the artwork, fans of the film for their support, before once more reiterating the film’s importance, stressing “Today, we finally make history”. Liu has been passionate about the project long before being cast as the hero, with the star tweeting his desire to play the hero shortly after reading about its announcement in an article. Liu reflected on the tweet, stating “I just tweeted it out into the ether because I loved superhero movies and I always kind of dreamt of myself as a superhero in my wildest dreams.” Since then, Liu has frequently shown his support for the film, sharing his reactions to the film’s first teaser trailer and poster when they debuted on his birthday, as well as posing with a billboard in his hometown of Toronto.
Liu has also been a passionate defender of the film, criticizing Disney CEO Bob Chapek for regarding the film’s theater-only release as an “experiment” by directly calling out the CEO on Twitter, stating “We are not an experiment” before promising that the film would make history upon its release. As Liu promised, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a milestone, historic moment in Hollywood, offering audiences representation with a leading Asian hero and celebrating Asian culture on the big screen.
