Fans of Sister Wives who watched the show’s early seasons think that the Brown family was happier back then and wish that Kody Brown, his wives, and their children could travel back in time. These days, the clan’s dysfunction is hard to ignore, and Kody, who was known for his cheerful and calm demeanor in the good old days, is definitely letting a little bitterness seep in. Suffice it to say that he’s not the only family member who has issues, and the constant turmoil makes some viewers feel very sad.
When Sister Wives season 1 premiered back in 2010, the Brown family had no trouble building a fanbase. While they certainly had their critics during the earlier seasons, there was something undeniably endearing about watching the Brown family members carve pumpkins together, or have prayer meetings, or welcome new babies into the fold.
While polygamy seemed very exotic to most viewers, the family had an old-fashioned vibe and a sense of cohesiveness that some fans envied. Members of the Brown family never had to go it alone. There were always children running around and wives chatting. At the center of the action was Kody, whose love of being filmed was obvious. Kody comes to life in the spotlight, and way back when, he seemed cheery despite his fair share of stress. Now, things are very different.
Most fans place the blame for the family’s dysfunction on fourth wife Robyn Brown. Meri Brown was Kody’s first wife, and she agreed to divorce Kody so he could legally marry Robyn. This was considered a selfless sacrifice by most Sister Wives viewers. Kody wanted to adopt Robyn’s children, and that was the catalyst for his divorce from Meri. Kody now has spiritual unions with Meri, as well as his second wife Janelle Brown and his third wife, Christine Brown. The issue seems to be the fact that Kody fell deeply in love with “Sobbin Robyn,” as she is derisively referred to by her detractors. It’s possible that he’d never before experienced love on that level. It seemed to upset the apple cart, and nothing was ever the same.
If you’re truly in love with one legal wife, is it hard to carry on with three other spiritual unions? It certainly seems like it. Fans have watched his face light up while he talks to Robyn, although they’ve had their spats. Overall, it seems like Kody’s connection with the Sisterwife’s Closet jewelry designer is much stronger than the bonds he shares with Meri, Janelle, and Christine. The so-called special treatment that Robyn received, from Kody picking out her wedding dress to her long honeymoon, has brought out the green-eyed monster in the other wives. They are no strangers to jealousy anyway, but Robyn triggered something primal in them. Kody’s obvious affection for Robyn really hurt them. While the years have passed, that jealousy continues to smolder, like a fire that never quite goes out.
Robyn can’t help being the favorite wife, but before she came on the scene, life seemed more tranquil for the Brown family. Now, the Brown family’s dreams of a Coyote Pass utopia are going up in smoke, the family is splintering, and hurt feelings abound. It’s only natural that Sister Wives fans wish the family could go back to easier days when they lived together in the true spirit of polygamy. However, there is no unringing the bell, and the Brown family needs to decide how to navigate the future as a unit or otherwise.
