Despite being younger and less experienced, Ultimate X-Men‘s Storm was able to defeat one of Wolverine‘s strongest villains. Yuriko Oyama was so serious about her vendetta against Logan that she subjected herself to extensive treatments that turned her into a vicious cyborg assassin and mercenary called Lady Deathstrike. While her Ultimate counterpart went through a similar transition, her vendetta was more with Storm than Wolverine, a ghost from Ororo Monroe’s past that she was able to confront and eventually defeat.
When Yuriko learned that her father Lord Dark Wind’s adamantium bonding process was part of the procedure that turned Logan into Wolverine, she saw it as a grave injustice and dishonor to her family and father’s memory. When Logan proved too difficult to defeat, Yuriko went to the wrong people for the right price and underwent a similar adamantium bonding process as well as additional cybernetic enhancements, making Lady Deathstrike a frequent enemy of Logan and the X-Men. In the Ultimate universe, Yuriko was a prominent car thief who mentored a young Ororo Monroe. When the price of doing business became too much, Ororo attempted to flee Yuri’s influence via motorcycle, a chase complicated by Ororo’s untested mutant powers. Whether blinded by the rain or her own ambition, Yuri collided with an oncoming truck, and with her bike exploding, she was presumed dead.
In Ultimate X-Men #59-60 by Brian K. Vaughn and Stuart Immonen, Yuriko returned working with remnants of the former Weapon X program to ambush Storm during her attempt to find and bring Wolverine back to the X-Men. Thinking she was another mutant assassin, Logan fought back but Yuriko held her ground, stating he wasn’t her target, Ororo was. In a series of flashbacks, Yuriko survived the crash but after waking from a coma, she was paralyzed and required a ventilator to live. She was eventually approached by Dr. Cornelius who promised her rehabilitation and power if she helped him get revenge on Storm and her protector Wolverine for their role in Colonel John Wraith’s death. His promise of power and payback was enough for Yuriko to comply and she underwent the treatment to become Deathstrike.
Dr. Cornelius’ treatment not only gave Yuriko similar powers to Wolverine but their extensive knowledge about Wolverine and his past gave her an additional advantage against him. After her healing factor kicked in, she incapacitated Logan with one finger, injected in a specific place that could seriously hurt or even kill him. While Lady Deathstrike could hold her own against Logan, her Ultimate counterpart considers herself his superior and him a waste of adamantium simply in her way. This murder for show was ended when Ororo used her powers to cause a tree to fall upon Yuri which crushed her but only knocked her unconscious.
While Logan and Storm dealt with the incoming Weapon X helicopters, Ororo is surprised when Yuriko’s hands wrap around her neck, threatening to kill her and then Logan. Storm decides to make the ultimate sacrifice, apologizing for her role in ruining Yuri’s life before using her powers to get struck by lightning, knowing it could kill her as well. Storm is literally considered a goddess to some in the Marvel universe and an Omega-level mutant so it’s no surprise that she was able to take out a potential X-Men villain in another world. Although this wouldn’t be the last time we’d see Ultimate Lady Deathstrike, one can imagine Storm and Wolverine would be ready just in case Yuriko came knocking on the X-Men’s doors looking for a rematch.
