The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn teases the film’s Blu-ray release will be packed with deleted scenes. Best known for his work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn’s first foray into the DC Extended Universe has proved a hit with fans. Despite a disappointing performance at the box office, The Suicide Squad performed well on HBO Max and has received rave reviews. As the standalone follow up to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), Gunn’s blockbuster funnier, darker, and, more importantly, insane.
In The Suicide Squad, returning Task Force X members Rick Flag, Harley Quinn, and Captain Boomerang are joined by newcomers including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Ratcatcher 2, and Polka-Dot Man. In line with John Ostrander’s source material, most of the unmentioned members of Task Force X (and Captain Boomerang), never make it to the opening credits. Those who survive infiltrate Jotunheimen on Corto Maltese and, ultimately, save the island from Starro the Conqueror. The Suicide Squad left HBO Max this week; however, the film is expected to become available on VOD sites on September 16th and release on DVD/Blu-ray near/around the end of October.
James Gunn has a propensity for being active on social media, often interacting with fans and answering questions related to his films. The director was recently asked on Twitter when The Suicide Squad will be available on 4K Blu-ray. Read his responding tweet below:
As The Suicide Squad prepared to leave HBO Max, Gunn and some of the film’s cast members recently took part in a Twitter watch party, sharing a lot of behind-the-scenes tidbits regarding production. Gunn has also shared a plethora of interesting things since the film’s release, including posting information on how certain The Suicide Squad scenes were filmed and photos/videos of the cast. Gunn and company, especially John Cena, have clearly had a blast working on The Suicide Squad. It will be interesting to see what deleted scenes and other extras are included on the Blu-ray, as they’ll hopefully shed more light into the film’s production.
The Suicide Squad’s post-credit scene revealed Peacemaker to be alive after taking a very small bullet from Bloodsport. Gunn has described his upcoming Peacemaker spinoff series on HBO Max as essentially The Suicide Squad 2. The show, which recently wrapped production, will take place before and after the flagship film. In addition to exploring Peacemaker’s past, the series will feature characters from the film and likely set up future Gunn-helmed DCEU projects. As he mentioned in the above tweet, Gunn’s next project will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3—which is poised to close out that franchise as we know it.
