T’Challa gets a new destiny as Star-Lord in the trailer for Marvel’s What If…? episode 2. With only one episode under its belt, What If…? has just begun to scratch the surface of what is possible in the Marvel multiverse. Last week’s premiere explored what Captain America: The First Avenger would’ve looked like if Peggy Carter took the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. That simple change resulted in a very different Marvel timeline, wherein Peggy ended up in the future and Bucky Barnes never became the Winter Soldier.
However, instead of exploring that in further detail, What If…? will drastically shift gears with its second episode. Dropping on Disney+ this Wednesday, episode 2 will imagine what would’ve happened if T’Challa, not Peter Quill, became Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Star-Lord. Compelling premise aside, this installment of What If…? is eagerly anticipated because it also features one of the final MCU performances of the late Chadwick Boseman. Like many others from the franchise, Boseman returned to voice his live-action character T’Challa; he’s slated to appear in multiple episodes.
Ahead of Wednesday’s debut, Rotten Tomatoes shared the trailer for What If…? episode 2. The clip reveals the simple change that leads to T’Challa becoming Star-Lord (the Ravagers stop by Wakanda instead of Missouri) and teases a new “job” for the grown-up version of the space-traveling hero. Check it out down below.
While What If…? episode 1 largely followed the events of Captain America: The First Avenger to a T (save for the Captain change), it looks like episode 2 won’t be sticking close to Guardians of the Galaxy. The trailer hints viewers will see more of T’Challa’s initial introduction to the Ravagers and space, and his interaction with Korath plays out much differently than Peter’s did in the movie. Plus, T’Challa is poised to embark on an exciting job in What If…? episode 2, though details are slim on what it is.
T’Challa might not be the first person one thinks of when trying to imagine an alternate Star-Lord, but that’s what makes this episode of What If…? so intriguing. According to Marvel boss Kevin Feige, Boseman enjoyed voicing this version of T’Challa so much, he wanted to bring elements of it into Black Panther 2. While that sadly won’t be the case anymore, fans at least get to hear a new take on the Wakandan hero through What If…?. T’Challa will pop up in additional episodes down the line, and hopefully they’ll be just as fun as episode 2 promises to be.
