A newly released behind-the-scenes image from The Suicide Squad shows members of the film’s cast enjoying each other’s company while filming the movie’s club scene. A soft reboot of the continuity established by David Ayer in 2016, The Suicide Squad sees creative control of the titular team handed over to Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn. The film debuted earlier this month and has thus far received largely positive reviews among fans and critics.
The Suicide Squad focuses on a team of DC supervillains assembled by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to do the dirty work of the United States government. Officially known as Task Force X, a team consisting of Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and several others are dispatched to the fictional island nation of Corto Maltese to take down a mysterious experiment known as “Project Starfish.” Along the way, the film explores each character’s backstory as the audience learns more about their respective tragic pasts and the traumas that turned them into villains/reluctant heroes.
One of the key character-building sequences in The Suicide Squad is the sequence in which the team waits in a Corto Maltese bar for The Thinker (Peter Capaldi). Now, thanks to James Gunn‘s recent Instagram post, a closer look at the making of that sequence has debuted. Check out the image of Capaldi, Ratcatcher 2 actress, Daniela Melchior, and Polka-Dot Man actor, David Dastmalchian below:
With The Suicide Squad out, Gunn has taken an apparent victory lap over the course of the last couple of weeks. Posting numerous behind-the-scenes Suicide Squad photos from his time on the film, Gunn has provided fans with several glimpses of his collaborative process with his crew and his actors. These images range from closer looks at Sean Gunn’s take on Calendar Man in Belle Reve prison, to glimpses of Idris Elba helping to shoot some of the film’s key sequences. If nothing else, it seems clear that the making of The Suicide Squad was fairly well-documented.
Of course, one thing fans are left to wonder is whether or not Gunn’s continued enthusiasm by showing these behind-the-scenes photos will translate to continued work in the DC Extended Universe. Currently, there are no official plans for Gunn to return for another installment in the Suicide Squad franchise. That said, the director has already voiced his interest in returning to take the reins on another DC movie. If Gunn decides to return for another outing in the DCEU, the overall positive reception to The Suicide Squad seems to indicate that fans would welcome him back with open arms. The Suicide Squad is currently in theaters and available to stream on HBO Max.
