The latest teaser for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings position the titular weapons to be even more powerful than Mjolnir. The next MCU movie to arrive in the jam-packed Phase 4 is Shang-Chi, which premieres in theaters on September 3. Simu Liu stars as Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu in his first-ever movie adaptation; though Kevin Feige has been interested in making a Shang-Chi movie for almost 20 years, it hasn’t come to fruition until now. Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film, which also stars Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung.
Longtime Marvel fans will recall the Ten Rings to be the terrorist organization that kidnapped Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in the first Iron Man and was referenced with a fake Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) in Iron Man 3. Shang-Chi will finally reveal the MCU’s true Ten Rings and Mandarin (Leung’s Wenwu), but the name also holds another meaning for the film. The Ten Rings are also weapons and play a major part in the movie, with Wenwu using their incredible abilities to seek power and fortune over the years.
To emphasize just how powerful the Ten Rings are, Marvel’s latest teaser for Shang-Chi compares them to other impressive entities in the MCU. Yeoh’s Jiang Nan describes the Ten Rings as “stronger than anything in your universe.” The teaser then shows shots of Thor’s mythical hammer Mjolnir, Tony’s Iron Man suit, and the Hulk. It also provides just a small taste of what the Rings are capable of. Check it out down below.
The Shang-Chi teaser also reiterates that the movie will only be available in theaters, a point that has become rather controversial in recent days. While previous MCU release Black Widow also received a Disney+ Premier Access run, Shang-Chi will be braving the theaters alone even as concerns over the Delta variant and moviegoing persist. Fans didn’t take kindly to this news, and box office projections have Shang-Chi opening on the much lower end for the MCU, though it would still be a solid showing for the pandemic era.
Release prospects aside, all signs point to Shang-Chi making quite an impact on the MCU. It will introduce several new characters to the franchise, and the Ten Rings present opportunities for both compelling villains and exciting new weapons. Introducing objects more powerful than Mjolnir is no small thing, and it’ll be thrilling to see them at the height of their abilities. The various trailers and teasers for Shang-Chi have shown both him and the Mandarin using the Rings, and it looks like it will culminate in an epic battle for true ownership of them. Fans will get to see it all unfold for themselves in just under two weeks.
