Jason Momoa has a new Aquaman suit for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but why does it look so different and have a darker design? The first solo film for Momoa in the DC Extended Universe surpassed all expectations as it made over $1 billion worldwide under the direction of James Wan. Warner Bros. brought Wan back to develop Aquaman 2 shortly thereafter, with details on the sequel finally coming to light recently as production continues.
After revealing that the sequel’s official title was Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Jason Momoa and James Wan provided a sneak preview of what the movie will look like by unveiling a new look for the king of Atlantis. Momoa’s Arthur Curry received an orange and green armored suit by the end of Aquaman, but this won’t be the primary suit he has in the sequel. Momoa and Wan revealed a new darker suit for Aquaman that will be central to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Arthur barely had time to get used to his orange and green suit from Aquaman, so why is Aquaman 2 giving him a drastic redesign?
Blockbusters on the size of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom always have merchandizing to think about when it comes to costume changes, but that shouldn’t be the primary reason for Aquaman’s new suit here. In fact, this new suit is directly pulled from the comics. Wan has already confirmed that the suit is loosely inspired by the 1980s blue suit from the comics. It was featured in a four-issue miniseries by Neal Pozner and returned to DC Comics briefly in 2020. The purpose of the blue suit in the comics was to help camouflage Aquaman while he is underwater, as the dark blue color design was much less noticeable than the traditional orange and green costume.
For the purposes of Aquaman 2, the new suit is sticking to the comic origin and will serve as a stealth suit for Jason Momoa’s underwater DCEU hero. It is even possible that Atlantean technology could allow the suit to change colors to help Aquaman blend in even more, with a helmet also possibly included to make him totally undetectable. With Aquaman 2 expected to feature the search for the Lost Kingdom of Atlantis, the threats that Arthur could encounter could explain why he’ll need a stealth suit to begin with. There is also the possibility that Aquaman could lose his place of leadership of Atlantis for some reason and the stealth suit is used to help protect him from whoever takes charge of the underwater kingdom.
Aquaman’s new suit could also have larger implications about the direction of Aquaman 2. The original orange and green suit fit perfectly for the bright and fun movie Wan made to kick off the franchise. However, the sequel has repeatedly been described as being more serious and have touches of horror. The darker tone of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom would be a match for a visually darker movie and superhero suit.
